1. A simple way to redesign a family room is to rearrange the furniture. Take out pieces, add pieces from other rooms, etc. First you will need to get rid of the the clutter. Remove collections, underscale pieces, and outdated decor.
2. Create a focal point in your room. A great focal point would be a fireplace or a large wall where the sofa sits against.
Put your sofa, love seat, or chair at an angle to create drama. Hang a large picture with a beautiful frame or a large mirror to create a sense of space. Decorate your mantle with either a wreath, mirror, and a few candles.
3. What do you do if the kitchen is outdated? Paint, Paint, Paint! Sand, prime, and paint the cabinets. Add new hardware to them for an updated look. New cool styles for painted cabinets are, a rustic black, off white and aged, or vibrant red. You'll be amazed how easy this will pull together and how great your kitchen will look.
4. After you've conquered the cabinetry, paint the walls, and have the floors finished. If it's not in your budget to finish the floors, paint them. There are floor paints you can find at any hardware store. A fun idea for floors is to paint a checker board in alternating browns and khakis. Place a large coordinating throw rug under the table.
5. What if the carpet is old? Replace it! Or get a lot of coordinating $30 area rugs from Target or Linens-N-Things. Lay them in high traffic, main living areas.
6. What if the couches are outdated? You can pick-up a few couch covers that are between $40-$100. This will make a great fresh look. There's nothing I don't like more than sitting on a couch with the owners old grime, oil, and smell. No offense, but if you think about it, you'll be out getting new furniture.
7. Add decorative pillows on couches and beds, try not to hang small pieces on large walls, make sure everything is to scale, and you can never have too many decorative lamps, large and small, for mood lighting.
8. Create comfort zones. These are areas you can't wait to relax in. For example, a large oversized chair and ottoman with a throw and floor lamp for reading.
9. Another great & easy decorating idea is creating your complimentry gift within a comfort zone of the master bedroom. Beautiful bedding with a basket of goodies, wine and two glasses sounds ideal.
10. In the bathrooms you could hang a fresh terrycloth robe from the door and place fresh linens on the sink. Create a fancy little organizer for their belongings with brochures of your favorite spas.
